(3.1.2) Interactions, perceptions and relationships with the Australian environment
as expressed by the first non-Indigenous settlers

Task 1

1. Read ‘The European Invasion’ and pages 141-146 in the
text. Make notes on the PERCEPTIONS, INTERACTIONS AND IMPACTS the
first non-indigenous settlers had with the Australian environment 1788-1850.

Your notes should be able to extensively answer the following questions:

a. What effects did the traditions of urban dwellers and people from
domesticated rural environments in Europe have on the Australian
environment? What were some of these traditions?

b. How did their (1st non indigenous settlers) lack of understanding of the
flora, fauna, soils and climate relate to their interactions with,
perceptions of and impact on the environment? Read Bourke and Wills Story.

c. What is TERRA NULLIUS? How did this impact on Aboriginal relationships
with the land? Did their r’ships with the environment change?
How did this impact on non indigenous relationships with the land?
